Children in third grade are given the
opportunity to explore basic elements of art including line,
shape, form, pattern, texture, and color. The goal is to teach
children how to work with a variety of art mediums and to give
them the opportunity to develop their skills, craftsmanship, and
confidence through experimentation. Third grade classes will work
on projects, which will develop skills in drawing, painting,
printing, and sculpture. There will also be opportunities to work
on large and small group activities. Throughout the school year,
student work will be displayed in the Lower School hallways, the
library, the GA Book Fairs, and the Arts Center Gallery. Tours of
professional artist exhibitions in the Arts Center Gallery and
visits from artists will enhance the classroom experiences. In mid
year and at the closing of school, student artwork will be sent
home. Sketchbooks will be given to all third grade students for in
class use.

The third grade students continue to expand
their repertoire of folk songs and singing games. They review the
concepts learned in second grade and continue to build on those
skills. Singing continues to be the foundation of every activity
in music class, and the lessons for each element are drawn
directly from the literature used. Movement continues to be a
significant part of each class period. Movement activities
increase in difficulty as the physical development of the students
allows. Continued emphasis in given to inner hearing, part-work,
and memory activities to develop these skills in each student. In
addition, each student learns to play the recorder beginning in
January. While each student develops at his/her rate, it is
expected that by the end of third grade each student will have
learned certain core concepts involving rhythm notes, melodic
notes, recognizing known elements in recorded art music, and
proper techniques and coordination with the classroom recorder.
Lower School Music

In the primary grades, the emphasis of the
physical education program is to form building blocks for lifetime
sports. Class activities are structured so students will look upon
fitness as being enjoyable and fun. During class, students work to
improve gross and fine motor skills so that they feel comfortable
with their bodies. They learn to recognize their physical limits
while working to their full potential and they work to develop
social skills such as peer support, cooperation with one another,
and respect for one another
Ball skills, scooter activities, cooperative
games, dance, fitness testing, games involving hand-eye
coordination and foot-eye coordination, swimming, games stressing
locomotor movement and gross motor development, tumbling
activities, parachute games, and track and field activities
comprise the types of activities offered to third grade students.
Students also learn the appropriate methods to warm up for a game
and to cool down from an activity. Children are encouraged to
devise game strategies and problem solving skills to enhance their
level of participation and enjoyment.

Third Grade Science Curriculum

The enthusiasm and joy from the previous
years are still very important goals for the Spanish classes.
Third Grade children meet with the Spanish teacher once a week for
a 25-minute session in their homerooms.
The Third Grade Spanish curriculum includes
a review of what was learned in previous years.. Special attention
is given to descriptions of themselves and others. Reading and
writing Spanish are skills that become more important in third
Grade.
