Resources Sampling of Our Work |
We encourage an enthusiasm for mathematics in our students. Children cannot be enthusiastic, however, if they do not feel confident in their basic skills. To this end, we work to ensure that all students have mastered the four basic operations with whole numbers by the end of fourth grade. Students are taught problem solving strategies and are given real-life situations that utilize and reinforce critical thinking, such as effective shopping and budget management, or the in-depth planning for an aquarium, which requires decisions on a range of variables. A variety of problem-solving experiences are explored, including participation in Internet "Problems of the Week."
Our aim is to give students confidence in their own abilities and to help them gain a conceptual understanding of the material. Students are placed in three relatively homogenous groups based on the pace at which they are most comfortable learning. We routinely use drill and practice exercises, manipulatives, skill checks, and opportunities for group problem solving. In addition, journal writing gives students opportunities to reflect on a particular solution. These strategies help to clarify thinking and encourage lively discussion.
