We strongly believe that each child is an individual with a unique personality and a special set of talents and strengths. Accordingly, we have designed our fourth grade program to encourage each child to explore and develop his or her talents, both within and beyond our academic disciplines.

In all areas of Academy life, we feel that fourth graders should strive to meet a high standard of behavior that includes responsibility, respect, and kindness. In order to behave in this manner, children must first feel good about themselves. To encourage self-respect, we believe that it is essential to affirm the positive qualities of each child.

We believe that a healthy self-image is fundamental to the learning process and that the emotional needs of children are as important as academic needs. Children learn best when they feel good about themselves and their environment. We strive to teach children appropriate social skills that will enable them to function successfully among their peers. Social games, role playing, and discussion all help teach children to relate to classmates in a positive and constructive manner. Throughout the year, students are asked to work in cooperative groups where they have the opportunity to practice their social skills.

Research overwhelmingly confirms that fourth graders learn at different rates. Their growth occurs unevenly - academically, socially, and physically. Children at this age display a wide range of developmental progress, and we are mindful of this as we work with children each day.
