Wang's
Wrong Way of Thinking
By: Alex H
One day, a man named Wang was walking in a village in Yantai, China and met a newcomer. He said, "Hi! My name is Wang. What's yours?"
" My name is Chang. I'm homeless."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. You look like a nice guy, so I'll let you stay at my house." replied Wang.
"Thanks," said Chang. Then, Wang led Chang back to his house.
"I have to go and met my friend. I'll be back in an hour."
"Okay," answered Chang.
When Wang got to the restaurant and sat down to eat his bowl of rice and drink his tea, his friend said, "I saw you walking with Chang. He is bad news."
"He looks nice and that's what I look for in a person."
"Well, he goes around town stealing things. Ming told me that Chang had robbed him."
"I don't believe you." Snapped Wang.
"Meanwhile, Chang was searching Wang's house for money to steal, when he stumbled into a hidden room filled with incense. Also, he saw miniature statues of Buddha's everywhere. Then, a treasure chest caught his eye. He ran straight to it, and it was unlocked, so he opened it. Then, he couldn't believe what he saw! In the chest there were about 200 pieces of gold that shined like the sun. Also, there were a lot of things made out of jade. "Wow, if I stole this, I could sell it and get a lot of money."
Then, Chang went into the kitchen to find something to eat. When he got there, he found a paper cut of the kitchen god, who almost looked like he was frowning at Chang.
Later on, when Wang came home, Chang told him that today was his birthday.
"Okay," replied Wang. "Tonight, I'll make you the Chinese birthday noodles for dinner."
"Great!" answered Chang.
After dinner, Wang gave Chang a piece of jade for his birthday. Chang snatched it right away because he knew it was very valuable and said, "thanks."
A couple hours after Wang went to bed; Chang sneaked out of bed and went to the room where he saw the chest. When he got there, he pulled and tugged the chest out of the room, and out the door. Immediately, he knew that he would sell it at the market in the morning.
The next morning, Wang went downstairs to check on his chest as he did every morning. But when Wang went into the room, he realized that the chest wasn't there!
"Oh no!" he cried. Then he ran to the door, but it was closed. He went to Chang's room and found that he wasn't there.
But, Wang opened some drawers and found a message that said where the room with the chest was which must've been Chang's.
As Wang set down the rice paper the message was written on, he said out loud, "It was Chang. I should have believed my friend. I guess you can't judge a book by it's cover."
