Beauty Is But Skin Deep

by Mary H.

One day, in Beijing, there was a man named Chang Lee, who was a very risky gambler. It was said that the beautiful, very rich, emperor's, daughter, Ming was to come to Beijing, and was going to marry the richest man in the town, where Chang was living. Now that made Chang really excited. So he went out right away to gamble. Of course Chang was very good at cheating, so he got many riches, and silk, very fast, because many other men were gambling also.

As Ming peered through the great crowd of men "trying out" she saw Chang. "I choose you!" Ming shouted, for right away she saw all the riches that Chang had, and she wanted to get a husband to do her housework.

"Oh! I'm so excited!" Chang cried "I'm better than all you fools!" He shouted over the huge crowd." Bring me up to my fiancée, coolies!"

After they got into the car, they drove off to Ming's house, as ever in the crowd stared in amazement, for very few people in China had cars. Also, the wife would usually go to the husband's house, but this was the other way around.

"Get inside Chwung, I'm going to practice my tai chi!" Yelled Ming, when they got to her house.

"My name is Chang, honey." Chang replied.

"I'll call you what I want! Now, go get my wash done, and when you are done that clean all the windows in the building, polish the mile high stair case, polish all the porcelain in the building, then feed the pets in the barn across the street, and when you come back you can have a few pieces of rice from my dinner scraps."

"But, what??!!! "

"Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Ming screamed back. Day after day Ming treated Chang very poorly.

So to this day Chang realizes that beauty on the outside does not make up for ugliness on the inside. He now thinks a very wise proverb, one that I think you should use, "Beauty Is But Skin Deep."
