There once was a rich man named Mr. Li, who wore fancy clothing and owned beautiful courtyards. He was very mean and selfish. He was so rich that he had servants and farmers to work for him. He was considered to be the weathliest man in Beijing. Every night he had feasts of rice and chicken in his large dining hall. All the other people in Beijing hated him because he laughed at the River God.
One day his head farmer approached him and told him that his rice wouldn't grow. This man was very determined and said to the farmer to try again, and so he did. Later that month the farmer returned to rich man. "It is still not growing, what should I do?"
Now Mr. Li was getting worried. He made all his money selling rice. Finally, Mr. Li got so frustrated that he went to the banks of a river. At this point Mr. Li was so worried and sad that he prayed to the River God that his rice would grow. He explained his problem to the River God. The god told him to return to his home. Mr. Li returned although he didn't believe the River God. When he returned he found his field full of rice. He was very happy and thanked the farmers. Then he returned to the river banks. He thanked the River God and then became a very charitable man. He gave lots of his money to the poor people of Beijing.
