THE DUMB EMPEROR

by Greg S.

Thousands of years ago, when China was still ruled by emperors, there was an emperor named Shim. Shim had a son named Tane and a wife. They lived happily together. Then one day Shim, the emperor, decided to build his palace bigger. So he called his servants and said "Make my palace bigger". The servants then went off to build.

Years later the addition was complete. The emperor then ordered his servants to make the palace even bigger. The emperor's architect heard this. He quickly did some calculations and came to the conclusion that if the palace was made larger the mountain would collapse. The architect said to Shim "You cannot make your palace any bigger".

"Why not?" Shim then asked.

"Because if you do then the mountain will fall" The architect replied. Shim then reordered the servants not to build the castle any bigger. The servants did as they were told. After that the emperor ordered the servants to measure the palace.

Hours later when servants came back the head servant said "Your palace is two square miles"

"Two square miles." Shim repeated.

"Yes." The head servant replied.

"Why that is a RECORD!" Shim shouted

`"Yes it is," the architect congratulated.

"Go get my son, and arrange a party," the emperor ordered. When Tane heard the news he was jealous, but still acted glad. At the party everyone was happy except Tane. That night Tane thought to himself that his palace would be greater than his fathers.

The next day all of the news papers had Shim's accomplishment on the front page. This made Tane even madder and even more jealous.

Years passed and Shim died. Which left Tane to be emperor. The very first Tane did as emperor was build the palace bigger. Tane, who did not have any staff besides servants and cooks, did all the designing himself. When the design was complete the servants went to work. Then one night when all of the people were asleep there was a loud crashing noise. The mountain was collapsing. All of the beautiful China was wrecked and all of the furniture destroyed. Every one started to scream as the palace went down. The palace was ruined and buried underground. All of the people in the palace died.
