The Story

of

Yeung Yu and Chiao Tzu

by Matt

Once, in the Middle Kingdom (now known as China), there lived two brats named Chiao Tzu and her brother, Yeung Yu. Their family was rich, so Chiao Tzu and Yeung Yu could have nearly anything that they wanted, which made them very spoiled. On the night of the Festival of Lanterns, which came about fifteen days after the Chinese New Year, Chaio Tzu and Yeung Yu were very excited. This came only once a year, so really everyone was elated.

After the festivities, which was around 1:30 in the morning (yawn), everyone began to go into their homes and go to sleep. Almost everyone, that is. All but Chiao Tzu and Yeung Yu. "Why can't this go on forever?" they complained. "This is fun!" But they were so tired that they went to bed anyway.

Way up in the heavens, the Gods all peered down from the clouds and said, "Why don't we give those two spoiled brats what they want? Then they'll see that everyday cannot be so exciting and entertaining!" And so it was decided that Chiao Tzu and Yeung Yu would relive the Festival of Lanterns until they understood and appreciated ordinary days.

So when Chiao Tzu and Yeung Yu woke up the "next" morning, everyone was preparing for the Festival of Lanterns! At first, the siblings were taken aback, but then elated at the fact that their desire had come true. This went on for about thirteen more times until Chiao Tzu and Yeung Yu got bored of the repetitious festivities. The next morning, when brother and sister awoke, they realized that it was the real "next day," that is, time really had moved on. They rejoiced, for they had learned that everyday cannot be a Feast of Lanterns.
