Waiting for Freedom

by Ali

I watched

I saw what I have never seen before

Hand in hand

Blacks and whites

A twinkle came to my eyes

That sight I was sure I would never see again

I watched

I saw that I couldn't change the color of my skin

I was dark

Darker than any rainy night sky

The sound I hoped I would hear once again

Laughing one by one together

As I looked over I saw it

They don't think we understood

Understood what they were doing to us

I saw the signs that read "Whites only!"

All over town

Segregation

Segregation was splitting us apart

I wanted to be integregated

The days that

passed me

Left me and my memories

I was lost in my own heart

Thinking one word

why?
