Harpy Eagle

Harpy Eagles stand 3 1/2 feet tall and weigh 20 pounds. They are the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. Harpys are fierce hunters, and will prey upon monkeys and even sloths. Its short and stout wings can propell it up to 50 m.p.h. through dense canopy to catch its unfortunate prey. It can practially do a roll turn to catch something behind a tree. A monkey's only defense is to jump 150 feet from the canopy to the floor. It is not often that scientests see Harpys. They are becoming rarer due to deforestation.

Jaguar

Jaguars live in most of South and Central America and are the only big cats that don't roar. Jaguars are so rare that there is only 1 in each 1,000 hectares of rainforest in Costa Rica. There are several reasons for this; jaguars need alot of space to have enough food and poachers illegally kill them and human inhabitance has forced them away from certain areas. Cubs are sometimes born with black fur. They only weigh 25 to 35 ounces at birth and don't open their eyes until they are 13 days old. They begin to hunt with thier mother at the age of six mounths. They will hunt anything from a mouse to a dear, including birds. When full grown they are 44 to 73 inches long, not including the tail which may be 18 to 30 inches long. Please don't keep jaguars as pets. They like it better in the wild, where they were meant to be.

Eyelash Viper

Eyelash Vipers are poisonous snakes that live in the tropical rainforest of South America. Some snake collecters also keep these as pets. They can sell for a lot of money, even up to $300! Eyelash Vipers come in many different colors, and have many color "phases". They can come in yellows, reds, greens, oranges and many other colors. The two pictures on the bottom of this colum are both Eyelash Vipers, believe it or not! Some of the yellow ones also sneak into other parts of the world through banana shipments. Please, don't keep Eyelash Vipers as pets. Like jaguars, they are very dangerous. Also, they just like it better in the wild.
