The Day They Came

by Jeff

I remember they day they came,

We were peacefully eating.

Then they came and destroyed our habitat

Gave us diseases and killed our people

In 1990, the year the garimpeiros called it,

175 deaths were reported,

But our entire tribe knows

That four times as many people were killed

In 1995, the year the garimpeiros called it,

My entire family was among the 16

That were killed in the massacre by the Haximu River,

Machetes decapitated them all

Now our leaders are going

To the capital of the free world,

To stop the oppression

We have been living through for 10 years

If our leaders fail,

I could be the next to die

It might happen to you in the future,

So you must help us,

Like we would help you,

If your fate is as bad as ours.
