Uncas and Chipawook the Wolf

Austin A

"Children come and sit by the fire and I shall tell you the story about the Great Spirit of gifts and the wolf Chipawook."

"Yaah" said Nasha a five year old Mohican or River Indian as some people call them living in southern New York where the waters were never still. Excitedly, she sat down on the soft soil and warmed herself by the gentle flames of the fire.

Nasha's grandmother started, "Once many moons ago when animals could talk there was a great warrior from our tribe called Uncas. He would lead all our braves into battle with the Mohawks and other tribes and would fight fast as lightning.

One day when Uncas was out hunting fish in the river next to his long house while the woman were farming and gathering saplings, he saw Chipawook the wolf chasing a deer. Chipawook grabed hold deer but could not eat it because he had no fangs to chew it so the deer just easily kicked Chipawook and ran away. Uncas explained "You stupid wolf Chipawook. I bet you could not catch a single fish in this river without fangs,"

"I bet you your two bear claws and your trading with the settlers that I could,"

"it's a deal," exclaimed Uncas who went to find a school of fish that Chipawook could try to catch a fish in. "Here's a good spot," exlaimed Uncas so Chipawook pranced over to the waters edge looked in and saw a real big fat trout. In the blink of an eye he had the trout in his mouth and laid it down on the smooth bank of the river

"There I have caught a fish and you owe me those bear claws. I will not take your trading from you because I think that is very important to this tribe. Your braves would seek out and kill me if they knew I took away your trading so I won't.

"Yes I see your point but you have not fulfilled my task now you must eat the trout for it would be a shame to put such a beautiful and tasty fish to waste. So eat the fish and I will give you my two bear claws." Chipawook went of into the deep woods and came back with a sharp stick he put the jaged end of the stick in the fish and cut open the fish and to Uncas's surprise Chipawook ate the whole fish.

"You see said Chipawook intelligently as he put the bear claws in his mouth as fangs and stuck them there with sap. Never judge someone about something when you only know their name.
