Once upon a time in a little
village there was a boy named Gluscabi. Gluscabi was a young little
boy who was very different from all of the other boys in the village.
Unlike the other boys in the village Gluscabi hated bows
and arrows, and he hated to hunt. Instead, Gluscabi would
go deep into the woods and talk to the animals.
Gluscabi was a very lonely child. He lived in a small lodge in
a shady, sort of hidden part of the village. Gluscabi lived in
this lodge with nobody but his grandmother who was very old and
no fun at all. All Gluscabi's grandmother would do is sleep in
her bed. Gluscabi had to take care of his grandmother all of the
time. This was not an easy job.
There was a horrible drought where Gluscabi lived. All of the rivers had dried up. Many people were sick. Four people had already died of thirst and dehydration. People were so thirsty that a few of them started to drink animal blood!!! Of course Gluscabi refused to drink it because he loved the animals and the animals were his friends. Gluscabi was also a vegetarian. Gluscabi was an only child. His parents were killed by another young man who was learning to hunt. The young boy had been aiming for a rabbit but missed and shot the arrow right through the hearts of Gluscabi's parents. This was one of the reasons why Gluscabi refused to hunt

One day when Gluscabi was walking through the wood, he decided to follow the path that went right beside the dried out river. While he was walking he decided to go on and see where the river led. After walking about four thousand paces he saw something in the distance. It was water!
He sprinted over to it. There was a big pond, but a gigantic log was blocking the water from flowing downstream into the stream by the village. Gluscabi stuck his head in the pond and drank so much that he fainted. When Gluscabi got up and recovered he tried to lift the log but it was too heavy. He couldn't even lift it up a little; it was glued to the ground.
Gluscabi started to head home to get a bucket and tell his grandmother about the log. When Gluscabi got to his house he saw a stick across the door. Gluscabi knew this meant that the person inside didn't want to be disturbed but he had to share the news! He barged in and there was his grandmother, lying on her bed as usual, but she was dead. She had dehydrated. Gluscabi wanted to cry, but he held it in. He ran to the lodge next door.
A middle-aged man came to the door flap and once he saw Gluscabi, slammed it shut. Gluscabi tried to tell the boys playing on the grass but all they would say was "Go away, animal boy!" Gluscabi gave up. No one would listen to him. Then Gluscabi had an idea. Gluscabi ran into the woods and whistled; all of his animal friends came at once. Gluscabi had a lot of animal friends, there was: Bear, Fox, Turtle, Beaver, Eagle, Hawk, Porcupine, and last but not least, Chipmunk.
Chipmunk was sort of the outcast of this large group. Chipmunk was the smallest and the weakest. All of the other animals made fun of Chipmunk for plenty of reasons, but most of all because she had little tiny stubs for teeth. Chipmunk was used to being teased. She ignored the rest of the group and went on with her own life. The only friend Chipmunk had was Gluscabi.
Then Gluscabi told all of the
animals about the log that was blocking the water from flowing
into the village. All of the animals thought about what they were
going to do. They thought, and thought, and thought. All of a
sudden Bear stood up
" I know what we can do to help," announced Bear in
a proud deep tone.
"What?" asked all of the other animals in curious voices.
"We, the animals, will each try to break the log. First Porcupine,
then Hawk, then Eagle, then Fox, then Beaver, then me! The strongest
always goes last."
"What about me?" said Chipmunk in a small abused voice.
" You!" said Bear. "You can't even lift a twig!
How do you expect to lift up that giant log? You're just a little
stub tooth!"
"No I'm not!" argued the little chipmunk.
" Oh yes you are!" roared the bear.
"Stub tooth, Stub tooth, Stub tooth!" chanted all of
the other animals. The little chipmunk hurried off too embarrassed
to say goodbye to Gluscabi. ![]()
Gluscabi went home to his lonely,
empty lodge house hoping that the animals could lift the log.
Then finally Gluscabi would be respected. Gluscabi had a dream
that night. He dreamed about all of the animals making fun of
Chipmunk. Gluscabi woke up and looked around. Very soon he fell
back to sleep, and dreamed again. This time he dreamt that the
animals had succeeded, and lifted the log.
He
dreamt about him becoming famous, and how everyone respected him.
Gluscabi woke up that morning and started over to the woods. He
walked the four thousand paces over to the pond. Then Gluscabi
whistled very softly being careful not to wake the other animals
up from their sleep. The animals did not hear this soft whistle.
Gluscabi whistled a little bit louder, but the animals still didn't
come. Gluscabi whistled two more times before the animals heard
him and came rushing over from their habitats to greet Gluscabi.
The animals all met at the
pond next to the big log. All of the animals prepared to try to
move the log. First up was the Porcupine. Porcupine decided to
use her quills to cut through the big thick log. He stood next
to the log, and on the count of three, shot out all of his quills.
The quills didn't go anywhere. Next was the Hawks turn. The Hawk
tried pecking at the log. That did not help. The Hawk failed.
The Eagle was up next. The Eagle was very clever. ![]()
The Eagle found a large rock,
about the size of Gluscabi's head. The Eagle flew up above the
log and on the count of ten dropped the rock, straight on top
of the log. The rock came down with a big thundering bang
followed by a splash. The rock made a huge dent in the
log, but the log still blocked the water from flowing. The Eagle
had failed. The Fox tried next. He did not do very well. First
he tried jumping on it, then he tried biting it. After these two
ideas failed, he tried digging the log out with a stick. But unfortunately
that failed too. Next Beaver tried. He used his long buckteeth
to bite, and nibble through the wood. He got about a quarter of
the way through. Then the Beaver got a toothache and quit. Next
up was the big, strong, powerful:
BEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!

Bear didn't have a strategy
like Eagle, he just tried to lift that log! Bear lifted the log
pretty high but after a few moments passed by, he collapsed. All
of the animals were failures. Gluscabi started to cry.
"Don't worry" said the chipmunk in a comforting way.
"I will try for you!"
" Thank you but you might as well forget about it, you will
never be able to do it."
" I do not care if I can or if I cant!" said Chipmunk
reluctantly. The animals that were heading home turned around
to watch Chipmunk make a fool out of herself. They all doubted
she could do it, even Gluscabi. But Chipmunk had faith in herself.
Chipmunk climbed on the log and started to nibble on it. All of the sudden a giant wave from the pond came. The wave hit Chipmunk. Chipmunk went flying in the air. She landed headfirst into the log. She tried to pull her head out but she is stuck! Gluscabi comes to the rescue. As Gluscabi pulls Chipmunk out Chipmunk's teeth start to stretch. And that is how Chipmunks got buckteeth. With these buckteeth Chipmunk was able to bite through the wood and save the whole village. Gluscabi went back home and became the most respected man in the village.
THE END
