How the Skunk Got Its Odor

Retold by Kimberly

Long ago in a woodland forest there lived a skunk and dove. The dove's name was Whitetail and the skunk's name was Skunk. One day Skunk and White tail were playing.

"Hey Skunk, watch me fly high!" Whitetail chirped.

Skunk was feeling down and did not answer.

"Skunk, what's wrong?" Whitetail questioned.

"It's just that I don't have special talent like you do. I can't fly and I can't chirp or anything," Skunk sighed.

"I know something you could change. You could change your smell. You smell too good. Maybe you could change your scent. It would be very special if you did that."

"I don't know, but if it will make me special, I'll do it."

So the next day Whitetail set up a little plan to get Skunk a new scent.

"Hey Skunk, come swimming in the lake with me. There is a little surprise in the lake so close your eyes." Skunk was delighted to go swimming with Whitetail. So Skunk closed his eyes and started walking.

Then Whitetail said, "Jump forward."

So Skunk jumped forward and the water and the water didn't feel right. The water felt squishy and smelled bad. In fact it wasn't water at all, it was rotten pumpkins! And Skunk smashed them and now he smelled like them.

"I knew something strange was going on," screamed Skunk.

"Oh well now you have a odor!" Whitetail replied.

"Hey, I do have an odor now," Skunk realized.

So Skunk wasn't mad anymore and was happy until...one day when White tail was eating supper when a strong sudden knock came to the Whitetail maple tree. Whitetail was scared.

"Who, who is it," he asked in a quivering voice.

"It's me, Skunk. Turns out that those rotten Pumpkins didn't work. Now I smell like I did before," Skunk roared.

"It, it, its O.K. I, I, I have another plan. You ju-just jump into a pile of stinkbugs. If you squish stink bugs they let out a bad odor," White tail stuttered.

"It better work or else!" screamed Skunk.

"It will, it will. Just trust me," whispered Whitetail with a sigh of relief.

So Skunk and Whitetail went to a log. On their way they passed some Wampanoag weetos. When they got to the log, they got some stinkbugs from underneath. Then Skunk jumped on the stinkbugs and Whitetail was right. They did let out a bad odor.

After that skunk walked home looking proud. Everyone just looked at him. When Skunk walked home he saw the sachem (chief) of the Wampanoag village.

"Hey, Sachem, like my new odor smell?" Skunk asked.

"Ohhh it's alright," said Sachem under his breath.

SO when Skunk got home he took a bath to make sure it wouldn't wash out. The odor didn't wash out. BUT, two days later it wore off and the animals were happy it was gone. But Skunk was sad. So Skunk went back to Whitetail.

"Oh, Whitetail, the odor wore off and now I am not special anymore. What shall I do?" wailed Skunk.

"Skunk, I can't do anymore for you. Let's take a nice walk through the human Wampanoag village to calm you down," whispered Whitetail.

"O.K.," Skunk whispered with a sniffle.

So Skunk and Whitetail went to the village. Then Whitetail realized how small they were compared to the people. So Whitetail went and hid. While he was hiding Skunk was getting stepped on. Then someone stepped on Skunk's tail. That's why skunks' tails are always puffy. Because of that he got really angry. Just then an odor came from Skunk. It just came out of nowhere!

After that accident, nobody wanted to play with Skunk ever again, because of his bad odor.

The lesson to be learned in this myth is to be yourself; be satisfied with who you are.
