Why It Snows

The Wampanoaog Tribe, who live in what we call Massachusetts, sat around the fire on a cold, starry night. They were telling stories and myths about the past, then they sang and danced.
The next morning Squanto went to the mountain in the sky and asked the god, "why is it so cold?"
"It is the way of the season," the god told him.
"Well I wish that it was warm all the time," Squanto responded.
"Are you sure you want to wish that?" the god asked.
"Oh yes, I want that more than anything because I hate the cold weather. I get sick every time the cold weather comes." Squanto argued.
So the mountain god granted his wish. Then it was warm for a while and the people started to complain about the heat.
So Squanto went back to the Mountain in the sky and wished that the cold would come back.
The cold came back and everyone was so happy that they decided to have a very big feast. So while the men hunted and fished the women made a fire.

The fire was so great that the flames went to the mountain. The mountain god got very hot so he took the ashes and made them cold, and sprinkled them all over the ground.

And every year the god takes some more ashes and sprinkles them all over the ground. So that is why it snows in the winter.
