Once upon a time a long, long time ago there were a group of Native American magical people.
These people had the names of all the animals there are today. There was one boy and one girl to each name.
One day Wise Deer told Small Ferret, "I want to be something important to all people an...a...a... an aminal!" Wise Deer exclaimed. " An aminal" Small Ferret laughed " You must be crazy! An aminal! What a riot," he teased and ran into his cabin.
"I'll show him," Wise Deer told himself. Soon after he turned into a deer. All the people turned into so called "Aminals" according to their names. Soon they had a great celebration by the river. They wore masks and shook rattles.
The next day the baby fish and the Mr. and Mrs. had disappeared, but the bones remained in the water. The bears were gone too, but their heads were hung on trees. And the clams and lobster were gone, but the shells they had remained where they had previously lived!
The "Animals" were panicking. But soon some people had come that could speak to them.
The people then jumped into the remains of the old animals.
Then the Native American hunters came with their bows and arrows and shot some aminals.
Then the bunny was so scared he wrote "Animals," but they didn't understand. So when he tried to run away the hunters shot him.. Then they all ran away to different states and that is how they got their locations.
Then before they could shoot any more animals one tribe member called, "We should not be greedy or there will be none left for our children and our children's children." And so they left.
The next day the remains of the animals were left on the trees. "This must be their showing of the circle," Rabbit said to himself.
Then a little boy came and pulled back his arrow aimed it at Rabbit and then his father came and stopped him before he could shoot him. His father told him, " We have enough food already. Let's go home.
Then the boy stared at his father. It wouldn't take a blind person to figure out he meant business. He replied coldly, "I want my celebration." (When a young boy caught his first rabbit from hunting, which all men did, they celebrated, but the boy could not eat any or it would not be right to their beliefs) Then he told his son, "It will come with patience." And they left.
The lesson of circle is that when the Penobscott put the remains of the animals back, they made a circle.
The lesson of respect is to always not take too many animals.
