Ground Hog's Hole

by Alyssa

Once upon a time, there lived an unsatisfied Ground Hog. He was unhappy because he looked just like Beaver. He decided to find someone to help him. One day he was walking around the forest. He saw a group of Lenni Lenape Indians or as they were sometimes called genuine people. They were split into three groups. Each group was speaking a different language. All the women were eating nuts, fruits, and berries. The men were eating different kinds of meat.

As Ground Hog walked closer, he could see that their clothes were made of bear hide. Then he saw an old woman boiling maple sap to make sugar. They lived in wigwams. The men were wonderful moose hunters. Ground Hog found this out as he watched in amazement. Later Ground Hog went back to the river for a swim and a drink. There Ground Hog told Beaver all about the Lenni Lenape.

Then Ground Hog said, "Shouldn't you be making a dam"?

"No, we Beavers only use four logs a day. It would not be fair to the other creatures to take more than that."

"Oh", said Ground Hog.

After that Beaver and Ground Hog were silent while they drank and swam. Then six of Beaver's friends showed up, but they thought that Ground Hog was Beaver. Ground Hog got really mad, and he stomped off crying. He ran right to the village where he asked the chief to shorten his tail so he would look different.

The chief said, "Whenever you ask a favor, it always needs to be repaid."

Then Ground Hog said that he would come by every day to tell where the deer feed. So the deal was made.

Later that day when Beaver's friends were leaving, they said, "Bye Beaver" to Ground Hog. Then Ground Hog was really mad!

The next day Ground Hog went to the village to tell the chief where the deer feed.

Then Ground Hog asked for the chief to file down his teeth a little bit and he did, but he said, "Whenever you ask a favor, it always needs to be repaid."

So Beaver said, "I will bring you berries every morning."

Then with his short tail and filed teeth, he went home. The next day when Beaver got up, he went to the river to take a swim. He climbed on a log and fell asleep. when he woke up, he was in a dark place, it was damp. Then a worm fell into his lap. At that moment he realized he was underground. Now he was running around like the wind. Finally he found an exit. After turning down four circular tunnels, he ran to the Indian Village. The chief was waiting for him.

He said, "I told you that a favor must be repaid. Now you have been vanished to underground tunnels. There are four entries which means you never know which tunnel a predator is blocking. Maybe this will teach you a lesson."

Ground Hog walked home with his shorter teeth tucked under his lip and his shorter tail tucked between his legs.
