First Grade has been busy running, playing, jumping, skipping and much more.  The activities that the children complete are:
  • Cooperative Games
  • Ball Skills
  • Tumbling
  • Jumping
  • Pillo Polo
  • Dance
  • Parachute
The children started off the school year playing cooperative games.  They had to work together with their classmates to reach a common goal.  Some of the games that they played during this unit were:
  • Stuck in the Mud
  • Blob Tag
  • What Time is it Ms. Fox
  • Charlie Browns Pumpkin Patch
  • Traffic Jam
  • Cholesterol Creepies
  • Bug off Please
  • Capture the Rings

The next unit we moved into was our ball skills activities.  They worked on throwing opposites, rotating their hips and holding their follow through.  We through some math concepts into our activities too.  The realized the importance of using angles during certain games.  Some of the activities that we played were:

  • Bombardment
  • Bumper Ball
  • Continuous Dodgeball
  • Doctor Dodgeball
We then dove into our tumbling unit.  The children enjoyed warming up to the game Snakes in the Grass.  During this unit they worked on improving their balance, strength, body awareness and spatial awareness.  The students’ understood the importance of safety during the tumbling activities.  They learned basic spotting techniques with their partners. 

The first graders then jumped right into our jumping unit.  Their favorite game was  Jump the Shot.  They worked on jumping forward and backward.  The children then worked in groups of three and practiced turning a big jump rope for friends.  They jumped and sang to many different songs. 

We then moved on to Pillo Polo.  This is a lead up activity to floor hockey.  The children worked on dribbling, passing, shooting, goal keeping, defensive skills and team strategies.  Their favorite activities were Bombardment using Pillo Polos and Crazy Pillo Polo.  By the end of the unit they understood the importance of passing to a teammate and that playing good defense is just as important and at times more important then offense.

 Our next unit was dance.  The first graders displayed some amazing fancy foot work.  They performed partner dances, group dances and line dances.  Many of the dances that we did were:

  • The German Chicken Dance
  • Seven Jumps
  • Bingo
  • Alley Cat
  • Macarena
  • Bunny Hop
  • Disco (their favorite!!!!)
The Children just finished our Parachute unit.  They did not realize how tired their arms would become.  They enjoyed sitting under the parachute and telling jokes.  Some of the games that we played were:
  • Shark
  • Popcorn
  • Cat and Mouse
Our Next unit is scooters.  Come and join but don’t forget your sneakers!!!
