| The Babe and I takes
place in New York City during the Great Depression. The book starts when the boy,
whom they never name, gets his birthday present. He wants a bicycle, but instead he
gets a nickel. Later that day he is playing with his friend, Jacob, who has to
go to work, so he goes with him. Jacob's job is selling newspapers. The
boy is so sad about his birthday present that he spends it on an apple that a beggar is
selling. On the next street he sees his Dad selling apples. He has
no idea that selling apples is his father's job because his father says that he still has
a regular job. He even leaves every day with a briefcase so that his family will not
know that he is selling apples. His wife doesn't even know. The boy is very
depressed that he has spent the nickel on the apple when he realizes how hard his father
has worked to earn it. The boy starts selling newspapers with Jacob and they are the
best newsies in the whole town. Instead of calling out the front page, they go
to Yankee Stadium and call out the headline about Babe Ruth. Read the book and see
what happens when the Babe himself shows up and buys a newspaper from the boy. Winter 2002 |
