| Dave's dad dies and his stepmother can't
keep Dave and his older brother, Gideon. Their Uncle Jack takes Gideon to Chicago and
their stepmother can't keep Dave because he is a handful. So he is sent to the HHB (Hebrew
Home for Boys). All of the 11's ( kids who are 11) at the HHB are nice to everyone in
their age group. But the principal, Mr. Bloom, steals Dave's carving that his dad made for
him. Since Dave hates everything except the 11's at the HHB, some nights he runs away. On
one breakout he meets an old man named Solly and a black girl named Irma Lee. Solly
helps Dave throughout the book. Irma Lee's mom helps Dave at the end. Without giving the
ending away, certain changes occur at the HHB which make it a better place for everyone. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and reading about the
1920's. Boys and girls will like this book.
