This story is about three orphans- Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Their parents perish in a fire and they are then left to live with many of their relatives. Unfortunately, drastic things continue to happen to the Baudelaires because of Count Olaf whose mission is to steal their family fortune. In the story the three children are sent to an apartment in which they meet Jerome and Esme who provide a house for them, but their lives do not get any better. They encounter treacherous events, and they fail to save their friends, the Quagmires, who are in the clutches of an evil man.

The Baudelaire children live at 667 Dark Avenue where they encounter a secret passageway and a liar with an evil scheme who tries to steal their fortune.  The liar is a mysterious person whose identity is not revealed until the end of the book.  Another misfortune the Baudelaires encounter is that they are unable to save their friends, the Quagmires, before they get taken away by Count Olaf (who is also trying to steal the children's fortune).  If you want to find out what happens to the Baudelaires, read The Ersatz Elevator.

I really like this book because it is very exciting and suspenseful.  I recommend it to readers who like the other five books in the series and have a good imagination.

Mr. Poe, the person in charge of the Baudelaire's fortune, has found a new home for the three orphans in Esme and Jerome Squalor's penthouse apartment.  The three children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, are left at the bottom of an enormous staircase that goes up to the top of the apartment  building.  From then on they are by themselves in the extraordinarily large apartment.  Esme is the city's 6th most important financial advisor and is preparing for the "in" auction.  At this auction the city will be auctioning off "in" things --  things that are cool.  So naturally, Esme has a lot of work to do.  Jerome's job is to shop for things that Esme needs because they are "in" and to take care of the orphans.

Esme never pays very much attention to the children.  She's always going to work or shopping for "in" things.  Jerome is always trying to be nice and kind and never to argue.  He tries to get everything that the children want,  but, more often than not, these items are not "in" so Esme won't allow them.

The auctioneer, Gunther, comes to talk to Esme about the auction.  The moment that the children see him,  they know that he is no auctioneer.   He's the villainous Count Olaf who has been after the Baudelaire's large fortune ever since their parent's death.  They have escaped every time that he has tried to get them. Can the Baudelaire children escape this time before it is too late?

The Ersatz Elevator is the sixth book in "A Series of Unfortunate Events" about the Baudelaire orphans. In this book, Violet, Sunny, and Klaus Baudelaire are very unlucky and unfortunate. They are constantly being tracked down by Count Olaf, a terrible person who plans to steal the Baudelaire fortune. On top of this, their only friends in the world have been kidnapped by Count Olaf. I would recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed the previous books about the Baudelaires. If you start reading this series, I guarantee that you won’t be able to stop until you have read every book

The Ersatz Elevator is a great book!

Sunny, Klaus, and Violet Baudelaire are sent to their sixth home as orphans at 667 Dark Avenue. They are living with Esme and Jerome. Everything is fine until Count Olaf comes back as an "In Auctioneer." The Baudelaires are now in great danger, but they have to rescue the Quagmires and find out the true meaning of V.F.D.! Will the Baudelaires be able to rescue the Quagmire triplets and find out the meaning of V.F.D.? Will Count Olaf be caught by the police and put in jail? To find out, read the fantastic one of a kind book, The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket!
