Ten years ago in Tortall, the king passed a law that made it legal for women to train at court after Alanna had proven it was possible. By hiding her identity for eight years she received her shield and was a knight before the king knew that she was a woman. Now after Alanna is beginning to feel as though no other girl wants to train at court, a letter comes in. Although the girl, Kel, needs to talk to someone who has advice in court, she is strictly forbidden to have any contact with Alanna. As Kel first enters the page’s wing there is a feeling of dislike around her. As Kel forces her way through class after class, and lesson after lesson, the boys harass her in every way possible. The lesson masters have the power to send her home, but somehow as she struggles through the courses required and she gains friends. As the end of the year comes nearer she works harder, because she is on probation and if she does not pass this year she will never go to court. Adding to the workload she has, mysterious packages of useful, yet expensive objects keep arriving without a note. When the end of the year comes, will Kel pack her things and never see court again?
