The book Heir
Apparent is a fantasy story that starts on 14-year-old
Giannine's birthday. Her rarely seen father gives her a $50.00
gift-certificate to Rasmussen Enterprises, an arcade. This
arcade is a futuristic gaming center where you are attatched
to total immersion lines that allow you to feel, smell, taste,
think, see, and sense everything about a certain character
that you become in the game. When Gianinne gets to the Rasmussen
Enterprises there is a riot out front. She finally gets into
the arcade, and is able to pick her game of choice, Heir Apparent.
However, the riot causes damage to the computer, and she is
now stuck in the game! In the game Giannine becomes Princess
Janine. The game is set so that when she "dies",
which happens a lot, she goes back to the beginning of the
game. With a man-eating dragon, a head-chopping statue, three
wizards, raging barbarians, a dumb dwarf, and a thousand other
obstacles, will Giannine complete the game before her times
run out?
This is hands-down
my favorite book ever! The futuristic description and the
olden-times description are amazing. The plot is written so
that Gianinne learns each time she "dies." The twists
in the game never allow you to become bored with reading the
different ways Giannine tries to complete the game. Everyone
will enjoy this most extraordinary adventure, Heir Apparent
by Vivian Vande Velde.
