Title:  The Lives of Christopher Chant
Series: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci
Author:  Diana Wynne Jones
Reviewer:   Abigail K '09
Christopher's dreams always start out the same.  He gets out of bed, goes through the fireplace and walks out into the night.  He goes over hills, rivers and streams until he reaches another land he calls The Place Between.

Christopher's governess and his Uncle Ralph talk to Christopher.  They make a plan that when Christopher dreams he will stop and wait in The Place Between for a man who will introduce himself to Christopher.   That night Christopher goes to The Place Between and meets Tacroy.

Then Christopher's mother decides that it is time for Christopher to go to boarding school.  But he still continues his weekly trips with Tacroy.  At boarding school  all of Christopher's friends like to play cricket. Christopher gets hit in the head by the bat and has to go to the hospital. His father decides to take him to Dr. Parson, who isn't really a medical doctor.  He tells Christopher to take everything out of his pockets, including  any silver money.  Dr. Parson tells Christopher that he can't work magic when he is holding silver.

Christopher learns that he is a nine-lived enchanter and will become the next Chrestomanci.  A Chrestomanci is a person in the government who makes sure that all of the wizards, witches, warlocks, and other magical creatures don't get out of hand. This person must be an enchanter.  Christopher doesn't like Chrestomanci Castle and he doesn't want to be a Chrestomanci when he grows up.  He wants to be a professional cricket player.  Then Christopher finds out something is terribly wrong when Gabriel de Witt, the Chrestomanci at the time, is captured and Christopher has to take over.  Then he must make a big decision.

I really enjoyed this book.  I think that you should read this book before you read Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones.  I would recommend this book to people who like Harry Potter.
