Molly misses her dad,  who is a doctor, because he is away at war.  It is 1944.  They have a nanny, but she is very mean.  One time she makes terrible food.  Molly doesn't want to eat it because it looks really disgusting.  But the nanny makes her sit at the table until it is all gone!   Molly isn't very happy.  She knows that when her Mom comes home,  she will not be happy either.   But her Mom makes the beets hot again and puts in extra spices to make them better.

Her brother has a MAJOR crush on the girl who lives next door.  One day Molly and her two friends are sitting on the back porch trying to think of a great Halloween costume while her brother is shooting hoops.  That is when the girl next door walks by.  The girls start to make fun of Molly's brother and he gets really embarrassed.  So on Halloween he decides to play a very mean trick!   While their dad is away at war, it is almost like Molly and her brother are starting their own war!  But you will have to read the rest of the book to find out what happens.

This is a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read books about the past.
