Voltaire E. '10 The book My Brother Sam Is Dead is very sad. It's about a boy named
Tim who is stuck between both sides of the Revolutionary War. His dad is a Tory on
the British side, but is against the war, and his brother is a rebel and fights on the
American side.
After three years of war, Tim loses two family members, his dad and
his brother Sam. Tim's father dies when he and his father are coming back from
Verplancks Point, where they were selling cattle. On their way home Tim's father goes
ahead to see if the road is clear. He is captured, put in prison and dies from a disease.
Tim's brother dies because he is charged with stealing cattle, even
though someone else committed the crime. All Tim can do is watch as his brother is
executed.
I think this book is depressing and interesting at the same time. It
is interesting that a boy so young had to go through so much physically and emotionally
during the war. You have to be in a good mood to read it!
