Old Yeller is about a young boy named Travis. Travis always helps
milk the cows and gather corn, and mark the pigs, and basically work
around the farm. But, then one day, his father has to leave home and
Travis is left to take care of his brother and "Mama." Travis is doing a
pretty good job until the day that Old Yeller comes. (Yeller is what
they used to call yellow.)
One day Travis is going out to get some meat and finds the whole thing
is gone. Sitting there wagging his tail is Old Yeller with a huge belly
acting like he hasn't done a thing! And then, to top it off, Little
Arliss (his brother) has to keep the dog. At first Travis wishes Old
Yeller would take his meat-eating self to some other family, but then as
time goes on, all Travis wants is for him to stay.
I really liked Old Yeller because it is so descriptive, and I
guarantee you'll laugh, and you'll cry, and it is just one of those
books that you love.
