In the summer of 1812, on Mackinac Island
to the north of Michigan, young Mary O'Shea lived with her older
brother, sister, and father. The war has broken out, and Mary's father
must leave the island to go fight with the American Army. Her friend
Gavin, an Indian orphan also known as White Hawk, joins his tribe
fighting for the British. Her older brother, Jacques, longs to go with
their father, but he must stay on the island to help support Mary and
Angelique, Mary's older sister. He leaves, determined to help in some
way, and leaves Mary and beauty absorbed Angelique to protect their
farm. Mackinac is captured by the British, and Mary and Angelique must find the courage
to survive. I really
enjoyed this story, and it captured my attention to read the two
sequels, Farewell to the
Island and Return to the
Island.
