This book, The Seven Songs of Merlin, is about a
boy named Merlin who wants to bring his mother back from the
Otherworld. He does succeed in this. When he gets her back,
Merlin and his Mother are so happy that see a flower and want to go
to sniff it. Little did they know that this flower is not much
of a flower because really it is called the Death Shadow. The
Death Shadow will lure you in with its wonderful aroma and then, the
shadow of the “flower” will jump into your mouth and then you
will die after four full moons pass. The other bad thing about
the Shadow is that there is only a cure for it in the the
Otherworld.
A friend of Merlin comes to the rescue and
knocks Merlin out of the trance. But sadly Merlin's mother does not
come out of the trance and she gets the Shadow. This is
when the seven songs come in. Merlin has to learn souls of songs to
get to the Otherworld. And when I say the souls of the songs,
I’m sort of saying the meanings of the songs.
Merlin encounters many problems in his quest
for elixir that will cure
his mother. If you want to find out how the
book turns out, I suggest you read the book because I’m not
going to tell you!

The Seven Songs of Merlin by
T.A. Barron is the second in a series of four books. By the beginning of this book, Emrys,
the main character, has decided to call himself Merlin. After living on an island for so
long, he starts to miss his mother. To bring her to the island, he goes to the shore of
the speaking shells. There he finds the wisest shell, which then magically brings his
mother to the island. Then, as usual, something bad happens. His mother receives something
called the death shadow. To save his mother, Merlin has to embark on another quest.
This time he has to learn the Seven Songs of Wisdom passed down from his grandfather,
Tuatha. Will Merlin be able to learn the Songs in the one month he has? (Hint: There are
books 3 and 4 coming!)
