The humans of Dunlath are taking over the forest and cutting down trees where a pack of wolves live. Game has been leaving the valley in a hurry, so Brokefang, the leader of the pack, goes for help. He finds the only human who will listen to them. She is a fourteen-year-old girl named Daine who had once been a part of their pack herself. Her rapidly growing magic may be just what the valley needs. When she first arrives, she meets a distant cousin of her King, Jonathan. Unfortunately, Daine has reason to believe that Yolane of Dunlath, his cousin, is plotting to throw Jonathan off of the throne. Now there is only one way to save her pack, the animals of the forest, and the people of the palace whom she had learned to love! To do all of this she must first get over her worst fear!
