Title:  The Year of the Panda
Author:  Miriam Schlein
Reviewer:   Jesse M.  '09
When strange men from the Chinese government ask Lu Yi's family to sell their property to them so the government can plant more bamboo there for the pandas, the family says no.  Their home is very special to them.  Their ancestors had lived in this house.  Then a big panda comes down to their house from the bamboo forest looking for food.  The bamboo in the forest dies every sixty years and it is dying now.  The poor pandas are starving to death.

That day Lu Yi goes up into the bamboo forest and spots a mother panda.  As he approaches it he notices it is not moving.  It is dead.  Lying next to it is a little cub.  Lu Yi takes the cub home only to realize that it will soon get too big and it will need to go.  Lu Yi begins an adventure that may change his future forever.

I really enjoyed reading this book because it is about pandas.  They are my favorite animal and I learned about them in this easy-to-read book.
