Caddie Woodlawn, one of seven children in her family, lived on the Wisconsin frontier
of the 1860's. She had a disease when she was very young and so did her younger sister.
Her sister died from the disease and Caddie was on the verge of death. Her father and
mother agreed that they would let her run and be free with the boys just until she could
get healthy again. But when Caddie grew up, she would rather
plow than sew, hunt than cook, and she beat her brothers dares every chance she got. She
and her brothers were very mischievous. When the Indians threatened to massacre the
settlers, it was Caddie's courage and quick thinking that saved them all.
