The Cay takes
place during World War II. A twelve year old boy named Phillip
and his mother escape from their island home when enemy German
U-boats arrive. Their boat is sunk by a German U-boat and
Phillip, Timothy (a seventy year old black man), and a cat
are stranded on a secluded and uninhabited cay named Devil's
Mouth. The book tells how they survive on the cay.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and action.
On a scale of one to ten I would rate this book a "ten."
The Cay is the best book that I read all year.

Phillip wakes up on a raft in the
middle of the ocean after his ship, headed toward the U.S.,
is torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Phillip is frightened
and blinded from the explosion. Only one other person
is on the raft. He is a black man named Timothy. When
they reach land, it is an unknown deserted island. After
learning everything he can about this island, Timothy starts
preparing to be rescued. You'll have to read the book to find
out if Phillip gets off the island and about the relationship
that develops between the two characters who are very different
in age, race and social class. Spring 2002 |

Phillip finds it hard to put his past behind him and become
friends with Timothy, but soon he realizes how essential he

a deserted island. The island becomes home for several months.
Even though Phillip blind, he helps out a lot with the daily
chores. Phillip starts to think...what would he do without

The Cay
is about a white boy, Philip and a black man, Timothy. The
ship they are traveling on is destroyed. Philip is hit on
the head with part of the ship and becomes blind. Philip and
Timothy float on a raft to a small island. Philip learns how
to survive on the island and becomes friends with Timothy.
Will they ever get rescued?
This is a great
book.

The Cay is a great book about a boy who is separated
from his mother when the ship they are sailing on sinks. A black
man, who was also on the ship, picks up the boy on his life-saving
raft. The boy acts greedy and selfish toward the black man because
he thinks he is better. The boy gets blinded by the sun when
they find a little island. They have to make a house and learn
to survive with one of them blind. The Cay is an interesting book to read and I really
enjoyed it.
