It is springtime in Philadelphia and Addy has just moved into a boarding house. Her dad is trying to find a job. Some people are prejudiced because of his color, so getting a job is very hard.

Addy meets a nice lady, named M’dear, who is blind and livea at the boarding house. The lady becomes Addy’s friend and teaches Addy to do things.

Addy was born on a plantation. She knows that her birthday is in May. M’dear saysto choose a special day, but Addy can not decide. One day M’dear gets very ill. Addy goes to get medicine for her, but she has to face prejudice because of her color. M’dear teaches Addy to face prejudice. She helps Addy to overcome her anger and hurt and she gives her a deeper understanding of freedom. When Addy finally claims a birthday, she has learned a lot about life and also has learned to face her fears.
