| Reviewer: Abbe H. '06 Melitte,
who has no parents, has been a slave for as long as she can remember. She is the only
slave on the plantation and her life is very dull. Melitte’s master and mistress have
a child, Marie, who brings joy into Melitte’s life. Melitte and Marie promise to be
like sisters forever. When Melitte has an opportunity to become free, she has to make a
decision whether to keep her promise with Marie or accomplish her dream of becoming free.
