We are all becoming more and more used to the World Wide Web as a source of information, news, and entertainment.  Now is your chance to create a website that provides information to others regarding some part of life in Ancient Egypt.

This project will include research, some writing, and the development of a website in which you present your research to others.

Your final product will include:

  1. A set of research notes about your topic
  2. Four well-developed paragraphs that explain your topic and three sub-topics

    Topic Choices:

  3. A four-piece website (a cover page and three sub-topic pages) that contains your paragraphs as well as relevant images.
  4. A complete list of all sources used.

  1. All of the information regarding this project has been compiled into this project folder.  You are responsible for keeping this folder, maintaining it in a reasonable condition, bringing it to all classes during this project, and returning it with your final project inside.  All papers and notes related to this project should be contained in this folder.  At the same time, Latin homework, math quizzes, and science tests should not find their way into this folder.  If you lose the folder, you will be responsible for replacing it.
  2. You will be given one source, but working in the library with Mr. Thomas you will be responsible to find at least two more sources and take accurate notes on the topic.   At the end of the final day in the library, source sheets and notes are due.
My dates in the library are:  Monday December 2, 2002 to Friday December 6, 2002.

Source Sheet and Research Notes Due:  Friday, December 6, 2002

  1. Now you will need to take your source sheet and turn it into a bibliography.  We will work through this together in class, and you will type a final copy for homework.  You should type this assignment, and save it so that you can make any needed changes or print out a clean copy for the final product. Take your time, and be very careful with punctuation.

  2. Bibliographies are due: Tuesday, December 17, 2002

Corrected bibliographies are due with the final product on

    Friday, December 20, 2002
  1. Writing the four paragraphs.  Your paragraphs should include one paragraph that provides an overview of your topic and three paragraphs that discuss the details.  More details will follow, and all paragraphs must be submitted no later than Friday, December 20, 2002.  All paragraphs must be submitted on paper and emailed to lohara@germantownacademy.org
  2. Finding images for the website.  We will be spending two days in the CALC with Mrs. Siwinski learning how to search with images and create our own web pages.  You will include all of the details and ideas as in a traditional paper or essay, but you will have to put it in a web design as opposed to written in complete sentences in paragraphs.
    Days in the CALC
Monday 12/9/02- Practice skills for project
    Friday 12/13/02- Image searching
  1. The final step will come in January when we create our websites.  We will work on the websites in class on the following days:  January 7, 2003, January 8, 2003, January 9, 2003, January 10, 2003, January 14, 2003.
  2. After logging into the GA Filer area of your server account, go into Curricular Projects, then the AncientEgypt folder and your period. Now make a folder with your name. In here you will save your work. Make sure all documents that you emailed to your teacher are saved in this folder.
  3. You will spend four class periods working in the MSCALC. You will create your fancy grahics, titiles, images, etc, using Macromedia Fireworks and you will create your website using Macromedia Dreamweaver.
  4. After a brief introduction to Dreamweaver, following the step by step instructions, you will create your website. Copy your paragraphs from your word document. You may also enhance your page with color in the background, fancy titles made in Fireworks and buttons for navigation, etc. Remember to save your work in Ancient Egypt folder, in the folder with your name. Save the file with your first name and last initial. eg. carols.html.
  5. Following the step by step instructions for Fireworks, you will create fancy titles using the "Text" tool and the "drawing" tools available in Fireworks.
  6. You are to enhance your text using the stroke, fill end effects options. You can incorporate illustrations and images after downloading online graphics from free clip art sites such as http://www.artoday.com.
  7. You will remember to save your work in two formats: the PNG format, so that you can alter your work if correction is needed, and in the GIF format to be placed on their web page.
  8. Once the graphics are completed you will open Dreamweaver, and following the step by step instructions furnished, you will place the graphics on the page.
Websites are due at the end of class on January 14th.  On that day we will post the websites so that they can appear on the World Wide Web.

Through this project you will have the opportunity to do use the World Wide Web for research. You will learn how to identify good web sites, take notes and synthesize your information to be include in your paragraphs. You will then be given the opportunity to hone your technology skills by creating your own web site and giving something back to the community.

This project designed and implemented by Lynn O'Hara, teacher of history, for students of Germantown Academy Middle school. Web page design and technical assistance furnished by Carol Siwinski, Curricular Technology Specialist.
