Goals of project

To locate web sites of newspapers and magazines from the French-speaking world.

To understand a newspaper or magazine article written in Spanish using context clues, including cognates.

To recognize unfamiliar words in French using English cognates.

Procedure

Day before project begins

Your teacher will explain the goals of the project and the procedure

Day 1

Mrs. Siwinski will explain the technology aspects of the project, the conversion of the article to ClarisWorks (multitasking) in particular.
She will present her list of appropriate web sites; you will be assigned two or three sites.
You will browse the assigned web sites and look for articles of interest.
Days 2 & 3 + homework in between.
You will review the most promising web site and select an article.
You will convert the article to ClarisWorks and print it.
You will read the article; using available context clues such as photographs, graphics, names, dates, and cognates, you will develop an overall understanding of the article.
You will write a summary - not a translation - in your own words in English.
Re-write your summary.
List the words in your article French on the left, English on the right whose meaning you were able to determine by your knowledge of cognates.

Requirements

A clear, well written summary of the article in English
A print-out of the article in French
A list of French words and their English cognates
A list of suggestions to improve this project next year
