Students studied a unit on the family. In order to practice their vocabulary and writing skills, students were assigned to write a description in Spanish of their pets and why they thought their pet should be the "Pet of the Week." The idea for this assignment came from their textbook, Adelante. Students wrote their paragraphs, brought pictures of their pets, and shared their work and pictures aloud in class. They then cast their votes for the "Pet of the Week." Their work, as well as the results of their voting, was captured on a bulletin board in the classroom.
As an extension of this activity, students reported to the Middle School Computer Assisted Learning Center where they were required to word process their descriptions, utilizing the Microsoft Word Language Tool for spell checking, and then to scan pictures of their pets for a web page on which the "Pet of the Week" is featured. Students were required to save their work to their server accounts. The class will continue to vote each week for the remainder of the year for their featured pet.
