You have been appointed director of ISCS (Into Space Control Study). You may invite one of your classmates to be co-director, since your job is enormous. Use letter format for each of your responses, but it is not necessary to use a separate piece of paper for each.

The population of the world in the year 2000 is expected to approach 7.5 billion people. Some predict more than 20 billion people by the middle of the twenty-first century. If this does occur, there may not be sufficient room and food on Earth for humankind. However, there are many people who believe this will present no problem. They believe space travel will provide an escape for humans to other planets. Your mission will be to make preparations for such travel. Your first job will be to handle the mail, which is beginning to arrive from people who want to find a new home away from Earth.

As the new ISCS director, you must write replies to the questions mailed in by these people. Give each of these questions a brief, honest reply based on the information you find in tables 1, 2, and 3, and use your own best judgement. Questions 1 through 12 are taken from letters. Answer each one carefully and you will soon be an expert on space travel. You will want to personalize the letters by responding "Dear Sensitive" or whatever seems appropriate. You may write all of your letters on the same page, one after the other, since your secretary will be typing each one individually. Be creative, but be respectful of the person's feelings.
