To demonstrate what you have learned about the tropical island of Martinique, you are going to design a travel poster, using the fireworks application, which advertises one aspect of Martiniquaise culture. Possible topics include people, language, events, products, cuisine, tourist attractions, history, markets, daily life, music, and activities. Your poster will have six captioned illustrations or photos, with at least three sentences in French describing each one. These illustrations may be photos from Internet sites (try clipart.com, google, scanned photos from books or postcards, etc.) No English may appear on your poster. Please keep track of all sources you use.

This project will help you, your classmates, and students who will study Martinique in the future appreciate the beauty and diversity of this special francophone island, and, perhaps, entice others to visit it because of your beautiful travel posters. We hope you will enjoy creating this learning tool for others.

  1. You will choose one aspect of Martiniquaise culture to advertise. Possible topics may include people, language, events, products, cuisine, tourist attractions, history, markets, daily life, music, and activities.
  2. You will research your topic, paying particular attention to why it is so special.
  3. You will create a personal folder in the Martinique folder on Storserv, Curricular Projects area to which you will save all your written work as well as any illustrations you plan to use along with all corresponding website addresses and sources.
  4. You will create a poster that will advertise your aspect of Martiniquaise culture using text, color photos, maps, postcards, drawings, or other visuals that will help to explain the distinctive nature of their topic. You may select at least six images from any website or other source on the topic and must clearly explain their significance in French. All descriptions and explanations must be 3 sentences long. Students must ask permission from the photographer or website to use any photos that are not their own.
  5. You will spend four class periods working in the MSCALC. You will create your poster using Macromedia Fireworks and you will publish your poster using Macromedia Dreamweaver.
  6. After a brief introduction to Fireworks, following the step by step instructions, you will create your poster using the "Text" tool and the "drawing" tools available in Fireworks.
  7. You are to enhance your text using the stroke, fill end effects palettes. You can incorporate illustrations from ClipArt.Com available at http://ww.clipart.com. Ask your teacher for the user ID and password.
  8. You will remember to save your work in two formats: the PNG format, so that you can alter your work if correction is needed, and in the GIF format to be placed on your web page.
  9. Once the poster is completed you will open Macromedia Dreamweaver and, following the step by step instructions furnished, you will place the graphic on the page, and make a link back to the student index page.
  10. You may also enhance your page with color in the background, etc.
  11. You will give an oral presentation of your topic in class. You must clearly explain your topic and why it would attract future visitors to Marinique .
