The purpose of this experiment was to
determine if the probability of heads or tails
in coin tosses is really 50-50 for several denominations of coins.
In performing this
experiment the researcher placed Quarters, Pennies, and Great
Britain Pound coins into a
shaker. The researcher shook the coins inside the shaker for several
seconds to mix them
well. Following that, the coins were then dumped out of the shaker
onto a flat surface.
Next, the researcher separated the heads and tails into separate
piles. The coins were then
counted for each of heads and tails. Lastly the results were recorded
on a sheet of paper.
The researcher found that after flipping
4,000 of each of the three types of coins,
the results were close to 50% heads and 50% tails. On an overall
basis the results were
5,940 heads and 6,060 tails or 49.5% heads and 50.5% tails. There
were no meaningful
differences among the results for the three types of coins.
