The purpose of this experiment was to find
what the effects of dispercants are on marine plant life. Dawn
liquid detergent was used as the dispercant. The marine plant
that was used was Anubias nana.
The experiment began with eight
identical plastic tanks being filled with three cups of gravel,
three liters of non-chlorinated water, and one Anubias nana plant
each. These tanks were then let sit for two weeks, so the plant
could adjust to its new surroundings. After the two weeks the
pH was taken each day.
In two tanks 15ml of oil were
added. In two other tanks two grams of dawn were added. In the
next two tanks 15ml of oil and two grams of dispercant were added.
The final two tanks were let stand. Pictures were taken every
day, measurements of the pH were taken daily, and height measurements
were taken every week. The data was recorded for two weeks.
In coclution the pH became
more acidic in the control, and the dispercant. However in the
oil and the oil in the dispercant tanks the pH became more alkaline.
None of the plants grew noticeably
during the time period, some even shrank because of the shrinking
process. In the end the dispercants helped the plants.
