Spanish C Honors students will learn about the Spanish poet, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. Students will read a brief biographical sketch of the nineteenth century Romantic poet as well as some of his well known rimas. The subject of each of the rimas is el amor, of course! Each student will memorize and give an oral presentation of one of Bécquer’s rimas. The recitations will be videotaped with a digital video camera, and then they will be downloaded to computers, so that students may create individual iMovies. The finished products will be judged by the Middle School Spanish teachers, and awards will be presented for first, second, third places and honorable mention. All eighth grade students will be present at the debut of the class’s work during an eighth grade class meeting at which time the awards will be presented.

Students will memorize one of Bécquer’s rimas and recite it orally with appropriate dramatic gestures, props, etc. as it is videotaped. After the recitations have been downloaded to computers, all students using iMovie will edit their video complete with title, transitions, credits, sound effects and musical backgrounds.

  1. Students will be introduced to Bécquer and his most famous rimas during one class period.
  2. For homework, students will memorize a rima and be prepared to recite in class.
  3. Three days will be devoted to videotaping the class.
  4. The recitations will be downloaded into the computer iMovie for editing .
  5. Students will spend four days in the CALC.
  6. After receiving a tutorial on iMovie production they will edit their recitations incorporating a title, transitions, sound effects, musical background, and credits.
  7. The Middle School Spanish teachers will judge student work, and awards will be presented.

By completing this project, students will have familiarized themselves with the well known rimas of a great Spanish writer in an enjoyable format. They will have a sense of the talent of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and the lyrical quality of his work. They will also have the opportunity to practice and enhance their listening, and speaking skills in Spanish by directing, and acting in their Sonnet of choice. Finally they will learn how to use the Sony Digital camera, import digital video into a movie on the computer, and edit their work using iMovie.
