Introduction | Project Overview | Exchange Letters | Meet Our Friends | About Us

In order to better understand French culture, to encourage the exchange of ideas, and to promote communication in the target language, French students at Germantown Academy e-mailed English students at Lycee Julie Daubie in Rombas, France starting in January of 2000. The exchange continued on a regular basis throughout the year with various topics discussed between the two groups. Students with one to two years of French were allowed to write letters half in French and half in English while fourth year students were required to correspond only in French. Each letter was graded on content and accuracy.

By using e-pals.com, we were fortunate enough to find a school in France that was also searching for high school students interested in sharing ideas about home life, school life, leisure activities, and interests. We started our exchange by sending electronic greeting cards from www.bluemountain.com. Students enjoyed choosing animated, musical cards and adding personal messages to begin their correspondance. They next wrote letters of introduction, talking about age, family, school, interests, hobbies, sports, likes, dislikes, etc. Using a digital camera, we also exchanged photos of students, schools and surrounding areas. Students then wrote descriptions of their towns or cities, including various points of interest, geographical locations, historical sites, interesting tourist attractions, regional culinary specialties, etc. During the holidays, students discussed holiday preparations, celebrations and traditions.

We look forward to continuing this cultural exchange with Lycee Julie Daubie this year and hope to add to our topics as well as experiment with a real time live chat and a threaded discussion.
