The students of the Hispanic Cinema class will view the film Él directed by the noted Spanish filmmaker, Luis Buñuel. After observing and discussing the psychosis of the leading character, students will compare Buñuel’s portrayal with that of a film released for English speaking audiences. Students will view the film outside of class and develop a Power Point presentation in Spanish in which they present a synopsis, a brief biography of the director, details of the manner in which suspense was created, links to photos or animation of pertinent aspects of the film, a comparison to Buñuel’s film, and their own rating of the film. The students will deliver their presentations to the class.
1. Students will be introduced to the project before they view the film Él. Each will select a film in English that he or she would like to view.
2. As we watch Él in class each day, for homework students will rent and view the film that they have chosen.
3. After we have finished watching and discussing Él in class, students will be given 2-3 days in the US CALC to develop their Power Point Presentations.
4. Following completion of the Power Point Presentations, students will deliver them orally in class.
Students will select a film from the following list of choices:

By working on this project students will have had an opportunity to analyze a suspense thriller and to compare it to Buñuel’s film, Él. They will have utilized their presentation skills as well as honed both their writing and speaking skills in Spanish. Their reviews may provide the motivation for their classmates to decide to see another classic film of the genre.
