The Spanish 5 Honors class of 2000-2001 created a series of short videos to be used in the teaching of Spanish to the students in our Lower School. While there were professional videos available for first and second grade, there were none for the third grade. The Lower School Spanish teacher, Zaira Leal, provided me with a list of topics she would cover during the course of the year (table settings and typical foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, weather, the house, animals, school vocabulary, etc.) Each topic had a short vocabulary list of 5-7 words. Each student chose a topic, created a story board/script, and then proceeded to film their segment. Some students worked alone while others collaborated. After filming, students learned how to edit their video using iMovie2. They incorporated sound and text to present and review the targeted vocabulary. A final copy of the completed videos was made and presented to the Lower School.

You are to choose one of the topics provided to us by Señora Leal. After visiting with the Third Grade children and listening to their interests, you will develop a script/storyboard which incorporates the targeted vocabulary and teaches it visually to the children. You may work alone or with a partner, if your topics compliment each other's. You will use a digital camcorder to film your segment. Once you have filmed, you will learn how to edit, using i-Movie2. Remember that your video should incorporate the targeted vocabulary both orally and in text, should be visually attractive and should include a review of the words at the end.

  1. Choose a topic furnished by Señora Leal.
  2. Visit the third grade children and develop a script according to their interest. Make sure the script using the target language and teaches it visually and audiotrial.
  3. Using your script develop a story of the video shots you will need to communicate your lesson.
  4. Sign up with Mrs. Boettjer to borrow the video camera.
  5. With a partner and using the digital video camera shoot the frames for your lesson.
  6. After you have taken all your footage, open iMovie2, connect the camera ton the computer through firewire and import your frames.
  7. Once all your frames are imported bring them to the timeliner.
  8. Do what ever editing you need to do to clean up each frame.
  9. Once you have edited your frames you may now place transitions between you frames, add a title frame, and add a credits frame.
  10. Incorporate your voiceovers, speaking very clearly and loudly.
  11. Add music in the background if you like. Make sure it does not interfere with hearing your text. Remember music should enhance not distract.
  12. Make sure you save you project to the user folder.

Through completion of this project you have had the opportunity to practice and enhance your listening, writing, reading, and speaking skills in Spanish by creating, producing, directing, and acting in your own Spanish speaking lessons. You have also learned how to use the Sony Digital Camera, import digital video into a movie on the iMac computer, and edit your work using iMovie 2 . When you conclude this project please take a few monents to assess your technology skills using the self-assessment evaluation document at the back of your plan book.
