Cindy Thieringer '73

For more than two decades, Cindy Thieringer '73 has inspired students to think critically, embrace creativity, and engage with the wider world. As a math and science teacher, and later as a math coach in the Chester Township School District, she developed innovative programs such as Critical Thinking Games and TREP$ (short for enTREPreneur$), which fostered problem solving, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy among her students. Her initiatives often combined academic rigor with community service—whether raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, building school gardens through the Environmental Club, or leading awareness campaigns.
Thieringer’s passion for experiential learning took her beyond the classroom. As a two-time participant in the prestigious Honeywell Teacher Space Academy, including its Advanced Academy, she brought the excitement of space exploration directly to her students through hands-on science projects. She has also led countless international academic trips with the American Council for International Studies, incorporating cultural immersion and service work in countries across Europe, Central and South America, and beyond.
A dynamic educator and role model, Thieringer exemplifies the GA mission—leading with curiosity and compassion, and inspiring students to see themselves as global citizens capable of making a meaningful difference in their communities and the world!
Joshua Muskin '75

Josh Muskin '75 has dedicated his career to expanding educational opportunities in some of the world’s most underserved and developing regions. From his early days teaching at GA in 1979 to his leadership roles with the Aga Khan Foundation, Geneva Global, and the Brookings Institution, Muskin has worked across Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East to strengthen schools, elevate teacher training, promote gender equality, and combat child labor.
His pioneering initiatives in Ethiopia and Uganda are contributing to the transformation of educational systems on a national scale in those countries, and additional global projects have supported countless young people by gaining the skills needed for brighter futures. Colleagues around the world praise Muskin’s integrity, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to causes greater than himself. His ability to articulate a shared vision and leadership style—placing team goals above personal recognition and guiding diverse groups through challenges—embody core values of the GA ethos and mission.
Rooted in the belief that true education is about “lighting a fire” rather than “filling a bucket,” Muskin’s work reflects both vision and humility. His journey began within GA’s own classrooms, and his impact spans continents.
Lisa Sherman '75

Lisa Sherman '75 has spent more than three decades shaping organizations that spark change and inspire action. Under her leadership, the organization has embraced cutting-edge strategies and digital innovations to deepen its impact nationwide.
Sherman’s career path reflects her pioneering spirit and commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices. At Viacom, she launched and led Logo TV, the first cable network dedicated to LGBTQ audiences, and previously held senior roles at Verizon, IPG Agency (Interpublic Group), Hill Holliday, and the Women’s Sports Network, the VC-backed marketing company she co-founded. Today, she serves on the board of My Code Media, advises Guild Education, and lends her expertise to numerous non-profit boards, including her role as a Trustee at her alma mater, Dickinson College.
In 2025, Sherman was inducted into the American Advertising Federation Hall of Fame, and previously she has been recognized as the American Marketing Association’s “Marketer of the Year” (2020) and named one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People in Business” (2021). Her career exemplifies confident expression, innovative thinking, and a deep belief in the power of collaboration to create lasting change.
Stephen Harburg '78

A distinguished legal mind and devoted community advocate, Steve Harburg '78 built an exceptional career in complex litigation while never losing sight of the greater social good in his community. A magna cum laude graduate of both Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, Harburg practiced in the Washington, D.C. offices of O’Melveny & Myers and later Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he specialized in multidistrict mass tort litigation and earned recognition as a “Super Lawyer” for over a decade.
Beyond his professional achievements, Harburg has long been a steadfast champion for those most in need. For more than a decade, he has served on the board of Open City Advocates, which provides mentoring and legal representation to children and youth in the juvenile justice system after sentencing. Harburg maintained an active pro-bono practice throughout his career, and in retirement, he continues to lead Skadden’s Housing Team for the firm’s Impact Project, securing safe and stable housing for Washington, D.C. families. He also serves on the board of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Together with his wife, Dale, Harburg has made service to others a personal mission—offering expertise, advocacy, and compassion to some of society’s most vulnerable.
2023 Recipients
Laurie Biron '03

During a decade spent engaging at-risk youth in public art projects, Laure Biron realized she was more interested in the service aspects of her work than the actual painting. So Biron earned a social work degree at Bryn Mawr College and found her niche at Broad Street Ministry, the human services nonprofit where she is now CEO. Joining Broad Street in 2019 and becoming CEO in 2020, Laure launched a meal program called Step Up to the Plate to meet heightened need during the pandemic. Under her leadership, Broad Street went from serving 70,000 on-site meals annually to a four-site pickup operation that provided 1 million meals to hungry Philadelphians during the pandemic’s first two years. For guests, the meals often provide a gateway to transformative programs.
“Today, Broad Street Ministry has become the region’s most creative social service organization for people experiencing deep poverty,” says Biron. “We provide life-stabilizing services to more than 7,000 guests a year,” she adds.
Biron now oversees a $3.5 million operating budget, the organization’s first strategic plan in nearly two decades, and pilot programs like a mobile hygiene truck. She’s also expanded training for employees of other nonprofits on topics like de-escalation, anti-bias and what she calls “radical hospitality,” her favorite descriptor of Broad Street’s mission.
“We sustain a … [hope] that one day this practice of hospitality will be pervasive,” Biron says, “and no longer considered a radical act.”
William Hyndman V '88

It is no surprise to anyone who knows him that perseverance is Bill Hyndman’s favorite core value. He believes that many of life’s challenges have helped build him into the person he is today and has experienced great satisfaction by facing his obstacles and never giving up on his goals.
As a 12-year Army veteran who served as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, company commander, and personnel officer in the 82nd Airborne Division, Hyndman received three Meritorious Service Medals during his service. After leaving the military, he started a business called Patriot Connections, which focused on helping transition and place veterans in corporate positions by providing free career counseling and other job-search skills. Then, following his life-long passion, he joined First Tee - Greater Philadelphia, a non-profit dedicated to integrating the game of golf into life skills curriculum, as Executive Director in 2015. As one nominee wrote, “Bill has helped build a golf program that services over 150 schools and youth centers. His non-profit annually teaches over 45,000 students in the Philly area, and has also built an endowed scholarship program for kids to attend private schools in the area. He has taken over two bankrupt city golf courses and provided a safe after-school program for children. Bill has impacted thousands of kids and instilled life skills they will use for the rest of their lives.”
In addition to the incredible work he has done for our veterans and in the Philadelphia community, Hyndman continues to give back to GA. He serves as a resource for senior projects and partnering with our golf team to create a mentorship program with the children at First Tee.
Steve Jackson '04

"Media that resonates. Experiences that move you." -- Jackson-Cor Mission
In 2015, Steven Jackson met his future business partner, Ricardo Calderon, as community organizers in the Philadelphia area. Their work intersected in the areas of community building, social justice, and storytelling. After some time they created Jackson-Cor, a media services company that focuses on the power of relationships to inspire positive change. Through the production arm of the company, Steven has produced short films such as “Be You: A Story of Self Love” and “Open Your Eyes: Conversations about Gun Violence and Healing”. More recently, the Jackson-Cor team formed a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania and the Center for Black Educator Development to produce a short film that will feature youth and Black male role models discussing the intersection of health, Black men, and community.
Jackson has also shared his gifts of mentoring with GA through his leadership on the Alumni Society Board, Black Alumni Alliance, and involvement with our Black Student Alliance. As one nominee wrote, “Steven spearheaded a mentor program for our Black male students called GAME (Germantown Academy Mentoring Experience), providing encouragement and guidance for our students who wanted to connect with our Black alums. He has been a passionate advocate for all students of color and is having a profound impact on the experiences of these students at GA.” Jackson’s compassion and dedication to community building have reached far and wide as he proudly works towards enacting real change.
Derrick Pitts '73

From infinity to beyond is the best way to describe Derrick Pitts, the Chief Astronomer and Planetarium Director for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He is not only the first African American to hold these dual titles at a major science institution in the United States, but he is also the first American to set this benchmark.
From serving as NASA Solar System Ambassador since 2009 and the “Astrobiology Ambassador” for the NASA/MIRS/UNCF Special Program Corporation’s Astrobiology Partnership Program to appearing as a science content expert on the “Colbert Report” on Comedy Central and “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on CBS, his reputation as a trailblazer spans the globe. However, it is his life’s work to make science and astronomy accessible for young people.
“The saying goes - each one, reach one, teach one,” Pitts said. “My one favorite thing to do here at the Franklin Institute really is to see the lightbulb go off above someone’s head when they understand the concept that they’ve always found challenging but now they’ve been able to understand.”
He’s had an amazing journey to the top of his profession, has broken down barriers, and opened up opportunities for thousands of young people nationwide.
“You can always do something, you just have to find the path to do it. Never give up looking for that path and continue to follow that which excites you,” he said.
Kurt Wetzel '88

Kurt Wetzel embodies the GA mission in so many ways. As an alum, parent, teacher, coach, and mentor, he exemplifies compassion and collaboration daily. As one nominee wrote, “whether he is balancing the discipline/motivation/empathy line with Lower School students or instructing X’s and O’s with his Upper School players on the soccer field, Kurt just gets it. He knows the history of GA, he believes in the spirit of GA, and he is an omnipresent face for students, athletes, parents, colleagues, and other alumni.”
A veteran member of the 5th Grade team, Wetzel develops connections with his students that go beyond their time in his classroom. Each year he is constantly looking for opportunities to volunteer and bring together the community to make GA stronger in whatever capacity he can.
In addition to his impact in the classroom, Wetzel has been coaching various teams of soccer at GA since 2003 and currently serves as the boys varsity coach, winning the Inter-Ac League in 2021 and tying for 2nd in 2022. He has also headed up the GA Summer Programs soccer camp as coach and director since 2003. Another nominee summed it up best by saying “Kurt’s name speaks for itself regarding his involvement throughout the GA community. GA alum, parent, teacher, coach, traffic coordinator, mentor…you name it, Kurt exemplifies compassionate in spirit and resonates all things GA.”
2021 Recipients
Lori Dougherty Andress '88

As one nominee wrote, “the hallmarks of a truly great nurse are tremendous common sense, unflappability, depth and breadth of clinical knowledge and deep compassion. It is what separates a good nurse from a great nurse. Lori Andress has these qualities in abundance.” Serving as the Academy’s school nurse since 2008, Lori has seen it all. Whether it’s scraped knees, broken bones, a place to rest or sometimes just a hug, students go to Nurse Lori because she makes them feel seen and tended to. From the daycare to the retirees, Lori has made sure that students, faculty and staff are attending school in a healthy environment. Then came COVID-19. Through countless hours of training, weekly testing, contact tracing, research, liaising with local pharmacies and volunteering to vaccinate thousands of people in and outside of the GA community, Lori worked tirelessly to help keep GA open during the pandemic. She participated in planning sessions with school leadership and outside experts to ensure the safety of everyone. Lori has done all of this in addition to the daily workload required of a school nurse and has been the engine keeping the entire GA machine moving forward in times of great fear and anxiety. Another hundred tests, another couple positive cases, another thousand emails to reply to, another terrified parent - she helped everyone with a smile and can-do attitude. Nurse Lori has been a beacon of hope and confidence for the entire GA community, and she continues to be a true warrior on GA’s front line of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jessica Golson '06

The year 2020 marked a turning point in alumni conversations about Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Germantown Academy, and many of those conversations were spearheaded by Jessica Golson '06. She is a founding member of the Black Alumni Alliance at GA, working closely with the Alumni Office to better engage Black alumni and make connections with current Black families and students. In addition, she has worked hand in hand with Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 to provide feedback and alumni perspective on the Equity, Inclusion & Action Plan for the school. Additionally, she has taken to the proverbial streets to organize a group of impassioned alumni to form the first ever Inter-Ac and Independent School Black Alumni Association (IISBAA). Founded in the fall of 2019, the mission is IISBAA is to “cultivate relationships; and leverage the resources talents, initiatives and social capital of alumni and friends to advise, guide, advocate for and support Black Inter-Ac and Independent School students”. (www.IISBAA.org). Asked about this work in a profile written for WHYY in the summer of 2020, she explained, “Giving these schools and opportunity to be accountable is an act of care. That means we believe they have the capacity to improve.” Coming from a mission driven family (her father, Gene Golson '76, received the Alumni Mission Award in 2019), Jessica continues to be an unyielding example of an alumna leading the charge to change hearts and minds.
Stephanie Lueckel, MD '96

As a child, Stephanie always wanted to be a doctor to "fix people." Having a mom with a heart condition cured by cardiac ablation, she was inspired to pursue a career in medicine. Currently, Stephanie is a trauma surgeon, critical care, and intensive care specialist at Rhode Island Hospital – Warren Alpert Brown Medical School, and has completed research receiving grants in various areas of trauma and is a sought-after speaker. Prior to her role at her current hospital, she spent months in the African country of Malawi collaborating not only with US doctors, but nurses and doctors native to Malawi to help those who needed care, saving lives in conditions that are unlike anything here in the Unites States. Her compassion catapulted her to care for as many of the sick as she could until she returned stateside to resume her career as a trauma surgeon. Now add in the COVID-19 pandemic. In the early months, she practiced medicine caring for the acutely ill patients in certain “hot zones.” Being one of the few physicians with the knowledge of working the ventilators, Stephanie not only needed to treat patients, but also was elected to train hospital personnel on the use of these ventilators and the care regimen of all COVID cases. Always grounded, her work was highlighted in The Providence Journal where she insisted, “she’s nobody special – many ICU doctors are fighting the same battle.” She is a leader in all respects and does it with humility. Whether she is sewing up knife wounds or taking bullets from a stomach, caring for those with COVID, Stephanie puts everyone before herself and believes she is meant to save the patients with her knowledge, confidence, and compassionate spirit.
Helen Piszek Nelson '70

Helen Piszek Nelson '70 has lived a life committed to ensuring access to education, promoting international cultural connections, and cultivating lasting individual relationships. She has time and again demonstrated her commitment to education for the greater community through her service and philanthropic support. Being involved with the Community Partnership School (CPS) since its inception, Helen assisted with the concept and creation of the Edward and Olga Piszek Library. In addition, she has supported scholarships at both Dickinson College and Gwynedd Mercy University and worked to create a study abroad program at Delaware Valley University. Always one to step in and take action, her volunteer roles at several schools and institutions, such as the Ambler Theater, the Rodale Institution, and the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, have inspired and impacted all those who have been lucky enough to work alongside her. Additionally, through her support of the GA Singing Patriots bi-annual trip to Poland she has introduced generations of students to the international stage and the importance of exploring other’s cultures. Helen’s generosity and positive outlook have reached far and wide, and she proudly perpetuates a continuous commitment to community spirit and the greater good.
2019 Recipients
Jennifer Ehinger '88

Jennifer Ehinger '88 has worked tirelessly to improve the lives and the futures of poverty-stricken children of Uganda. In addition to being a mother of two children and a Principal at Certified Abstract Company, Inc., Jen finds not only time, but also boundless energy to bring hope for a bright future to these children. Jen has traveled to Africa five times—three times to Uganda, once to Cameroon, and once to Kenya. Her work in Uganda has been both independent and also in conjunction with a non-profit that has, over the last 10 years, worked to build and grow a high school in Uganda providing impoverished children a chance for an excellent education. While visiting Uganda, Jen travels out of the developed areas into poverty-stricken regions to meet people and understand their challenges and struggles. She brings with her important items from the U.S. such as shoes and clothing. Jen has literally been down on the ground putting shoes on children who otherwise spend their days barefoot in the dirt. While on one visit to Uganda, Jen saw an elementary school (that serves 100 students) in desperate need of being rebuilt. She took immediate action and within a few hours, right there on her phone from Uganda, Jen raised the money to rebuild the school that looked like nothing more than a stable for cows and goats. She has raised money to transform another school by cementing dirt floors and installing a well to provide clean water for the students.
Eugene Golson '76

An educator and administrator for the School District of Philadelphia for 38 years, Eugene Golson '76 brought about an unwavering commitment to excellence from both his students and his staff. Passionate about arts education and wanting to engage his students in the creative world, he worked with the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership (PAEP) through his former school, Creighton Elementary, to help students, seniors, and special populations in schools and community site environments to encourage excellence in arts education practice. In addition to his work in the schools, Gene mentored students through his church and held various leadership roles, including President of Ye Olde Philadelphia Club. Founded in 1926, the Club’s mission “is to establish representative behavior among African-American men and encourage its membership to be independently engaged and active in civic ventures.” In 2015, he won the organization’s Appreciation Award, along with former Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey (above left). Gene retired in 2017 and is now a counselor at Carson Valley Children’s Aid.
Jay Talsania '82

Jay Talsania '82 is an orthopedic surgeon practicing in the Lehigh Valley who specializes in hands and arms. Over the past 15 years, Jay has traveled with a group of physicians from Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation (GHHF) on pediatric hand missions to Guatemala, volunteering his time to operate on children in rural areas of the country. GHHF’s presence in Guatemala is crucial as communities continue to struggle under the arm of poverty and inaccessible medical care. More and more families are turning to GHHF for specialized hand and orthopedic needs. Because of GHHF’s unique relationship with the various Guatemala hand therapy and surgery associations, they are a trusted teaching source and a vital American group providing cutting-edge hand education to both the surgical and therapy communities. Through his work with GHHF, Jay has doubtlessly improved the quality of life for hundreds of children who may not otherwise have received the level of medical care he is able to offer. His 11th trip is planned for October.
Meghan McVeigh Maciolek '97

Meghan McVeigh Maciolek '97 created the GA Alumni Community Service Organization as a way for GA alumni to participate in community service opportunities and to mentor students, all in honor of her late father, Peter McVeigh 1760. Her efforts are felt all around the country. She has organized service projects to help at Sunday Morning Breakfast Rescue Mission, Face-to-Face and St. John’s Hospice in Philadelphia and built a network of alumni to lead outreach projects in other regions. She has also helped coordinate the GA Day of Service the last two years, with events in the Philadelphia area, New York City, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. She organized a group of runners (McVeigh’s Runners) for the Broad Street Run to raise over $15K for Back on My Feet, a non-profit with a mission to combat homelessness through the power of running, community support, essential employment, and housing resources. Meghan is leading by example and inspiring others to continue to Live the Legacy of Peter McVeigh. She is showing her own children and all of us what giving back and a little help from “your friend McVeigh” can do.
Karla Ballard Williams '90

Leaving a successful career in the banking industry, Karla Ballard Williams '90 took a leap of faith and began service work by starting a chapter of the Urban League, an organization aimed at empowering people of color to achieve economic self-reliance, equality, power, and civil rights. She took that experience with her when she went to work as the Senior Vice President of Participant Media’s TAG Division, a social action agency working with brands, foundations, and the public sector to ignite compelling campaigns to drive impact in vulnerable communities. Combining her business acumen and service work, Karla then created her own company and mobile app, YING, which is designed to help lower income communities use skill sharing and trading as currency. YING’s mission is to demonstrate that money shouldn’t be the only determining factor in what people have access to – that you can “skill share” to acquire your needs AND build community at the same time. Karla has also been active in working to raise awareness of the effects of PTSD on our veterans. Never one to sit and wait for things to happen, Karla has jumped into action by collaborating with Blue Star Families, a national non-profit dedicated to strengthening America’s military families through community, on utilizing YING to help them gain access to programs and support when funds aren’t available.
Athletic Hall of Fame

Created in 1995, GA's Athletic Hall of Fame has recognized over 175 alumni student-athletes, coaches, teams, and special friends.
Class of 1760

The honorary "Class of 1760" was created by the Germantown Academy Alumni Society Board to recognize non-alumni for their outstanding contributions to the Academy and was named in commemoration of the Academy’s first graduating class.
In November 1951, the inaugural class of honorary alumni were inducted and included those community members who "have devoted their interests...and contributed time and service to the welfare of the school."
Each year, the Alumni Society Board considers nominations for election into the Class of 1760. Please take a moment to nominate a non-alumni parent, past parent, grandparent, faculty/staff, or friend in our community who should be considered for this special honor.
Nominees are not to be judged by the number of letters of recommendation, but by their merit and outstanding service to the Academy. A form will be available here when nominations open.
Candidates with appropriate qualifications include these constituents:
Faculty, Staff or Coach: Those individuals who work over-and-above expectations to consistently and effectively improve the quality of life at the Academy whether by inspiring students to develop intellectual curiosity and to become leaders, or by contributing, often behind the scenes, to the internal functioning of the Academy.
Parent/Parent of Alumni or Grandparent: Those individuals who give themselves to help make Germantown Academy a better institution. Parents and Parents of Alumni selected demonstrate years of involvement and selfless dedication to advancing GA’s Mission in both word and deed.
Friends: Other individuals whose efforts greatly influence the direction, policies, and growth of the Academy, in some instances visible only after a long period of time due to the nature of the contributions.

Academy Club

Founded by the members of the Class of 1924, the Academy Club is an organization whose members are chosen by their peers in recognition of their dedication, involvement, and school spirit as well as their commitment to keep their class connected to GA as alumni.
The purpose of the club is to create, in the words of the founders, a "closer relationship between the Alumni body of Germantown Academy and the school itself." This spirit of dedication and involvement is commemorated each year when GA and the senior class honor certain class members for contributing to the life of the school.
